Foothills Market:  The Market is Open!

Let’s talk sweets this week on Foothils Market. Our vegetable offerings are pretty thin, but we had a good variety of homemade spreads that bring a taste of sweet summer fruits to these dreary winter days.

Most people are familiar with jams and jellies. We have a lot of favorites – grape, blackberry, blueberry, and strawberry. Sometimes people shy away from jams because of the high sugar content, but our growers also offer lower-sugar versions of some popular varieties. We also offer some products that are not typical, such as an old-fashioned peach conserve. Like jam, conserve is made with fruit and sugar, but the recipe also includes nuts and sometimes secondary fruits like raisins. This makes a conserve good as a sweet accent to meats, as well as giving an extra crunch on a biscuit or toast.

Shop the market for our sweet spreads, beef, or baked goods while we wait for spring vegetables. Place your order by 5:00 p.m. Wednesday and we’ll have it ready for pickup on Thursday afternoon.

Eat something local this week!

The Wednesday Market:  The Wednesday Market Celebrates 12 Years!

Good afternoon.

The Wednesday Market is open for orders. Please place your order by 10 p.m. Monday. Orders are ready for pick up between 2 and 4 p.m. Wednesday. See the website for this week’s product offerings. Here is the link: https://wednesdaymarket.locallygrown.net/market

Did you know that The Wednesday Market celebrated it’s 12th anniversary this week? I think this is an ideal time to recap the reasons for the Market’s founding, so let’s take a look back at our mission.

On January 26, 2011, The Wednesday Market in Zebulon opened to serve Pike County and neighboring communities. From the beginning of our creation, our purpose was to provide the freshest, locally grown produce, fruit and good food available.

We believe that small, diverse, family-owned farms contribute to society’s overall health, and the reasons for buying locally are even more relevant today than they were 12 years ago. By supporting The Wednesday Market, you:

Enhance your local economy – By purchasing produce and other items from local growers you are providing stability to your local economy through the support of local businesses.

Save natural resources – Buying locally makes you an invaluable link in the process of saving resources such as fossil fuels and packaging materials. Also, we are right here in your community, so the expense of transportation and delivery is kept to a minimum.

Provide learning opportunities – Locally Grown supporters provide member growers the means to help educate our community about the importance of sustainable agriculture.

Support a way of life – The number of small farms in the United States has decreased dramatically in the last decade. Please help us preserve an honest and worthy means of making a living.

During 2022 the U.S. economy was hit with inflation like we have not experienced in 40+ years. Inflation continues to be a challenge in 2023. Have you been to the grocery store lately? The increase in prices for basics like eggs, milk, butter, and bread is particularly shocking. Seven dollars for a dozen eggs – who can afford that? These outrageous prices have created new customers for The Wednesday Market. Not only are our eggs reasonably priced, they are much fresher than what you can buy at the grocery store. And, the Market is a great source for baked goods and other products that do not contain chemical preservatives and additives.

Whether we are being pinched by inflation or not, let us support our local agricultural economy. Buy from local farmers and encourage your friends and neighbors to do so, too. Consider planting your own gardens and sharing the bounty with others. Tell everyone you know that you order from The Wednesday Market. Help us attract more producers to sell through us.

Our managers are volunteers, as we have been from day one. Without our teamwork and dedication, the Market simply would not happen. A few of us have “retired”, but our founders’ vision persists today.

We are grateful to our Farmers and Customers for your support and look forward to continuing to serve you!

Your Sunshine Girls,
Sharon Fox, Nelda Miller, and Beverly Walter

Don’t forget your “apple a day” from Drewry Farms and Orchard, but make sure you check out their sale on assorted squash boxes and pie pumpkins too, it’s a delicious deal! If the spring cleaning bug bites you stock up on laundry detergent from Irish Elk Farms or try Clean Room Spray (under home and garden supplies) from another new vendor at RCM, McAnulty Mercantile. We welcome them to our market and look forward to seeing their great products! There are at least 14 different choices available in microgreens this week and there are sweet potatoes available from Pine Ridge Gardens and Sonshine Meadows. There are some lettuce choices from Shoal Creek Farms still for sale and Drewry has lots of Frost Butternut and Dumpling squash for you! Do some early Valentines shopping for your sweetie with soaps, skin care, lip balms, bath bombs and more from Meadowlark Valley and The Purple Gypsy! Or, you can choose your loved one’s favorite scent with a great selection of candles from Meadowlark or Drewry as well!
Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook and Instagram!

REMINDER- We can no longer accept credit or debit cards. We will still be able to process cash, checks and SNAP/EBT transactions.
We appreciate your patience with us during this transition.
